Developing An Australasian Spinal Cord Injury Research Strategy

Executive Summary:

From the moment of injury, through the acute and rehabilitation phases of care to the lifetime that follows, Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) presents a range of complex, varied challenges to patients and their carers, clinicians, service delivery organisations and other stakeholders.

High quality, high impact research is critical to addressing these challenges. In recent years the SCI research community and other stakeholders have undertaken a range of activities designed to optimise research planning, conduct and impact.

This combined National Trauma Research Institute (NTRI) / Spinal Cord Injury Network (SCIN) Forum convened key stakeholders to reflect upon these activities and consider how they could inform the development of a regional (Australasian) SCI research strategy that:

  • Addresses SCI research priorities
  • Harnesses research collaborations to optimise research quality and impact and minimise duplication of research effort
  • Minimises the burden on SCI patients who participate in the research
  • Can assist research funders by articulating principles underpinning high-quality, high-impact research in this field.
